Crafting a Budget Aligned With Our Goals

Now that we’ve thoroughly reviewed our financials and found some patterns , its time to take a step back. We never want the financials, or our past patterns, to completely dictate our future budget.

Deep breath. Step back and think: what do you want your operational plans to be for the next year? If you’re struggling to stop thinking about the money side, our article focused on Goals can help. Ask yourself what your Goals are for your business in the next 12 months. Its helpful here to not simply say, “grow by 10%”–if you find yourself saying that, you need to step further back.

Perhaps you want to launch a new product. What will that take? Will you need to hire people? Buy more raw material? Rent more space?

Be patient. Taking the time to answer these questions will prioritize your Goals ahead of the dollars and cents.

Once you’ve settled on a couple of good Goals, work to put dollars around them. If you need to hire some additional help, how much will you pay? How many people? When will you bring them on?

There are lots of questions that need answers, and it can feel daunting. But letting the operational plans drive the budget is the best way to achieve our Goals. Feeling overwhelmed? We’re here to help.

Stay tuned for our next article focused on right-sizing our budget–because when there’s no money, there’s no business, right?
