As I’ve coached entrepreneurs, I’ve been asked, “What do I do when I open my second location?” My answer is always the same: let’s get the first location up and running, then focus on the future.
The future you envision will rarely arrive without Goals to get there. Goals are the “Where”, the mile-markers on the way to our destination, the Vision we just established. Setting Goals may be easy-peasy for some, but challenging for others. Every business will benefit from creating S.M.A.R.T. goals to lead us toward our Vision.
Goals will be short, medium and long term. Let’s use the Vision we created to focus our goals. While our Vision may be what our business will become or embody 5 years from now, we don’t need to create Goals with that long of a runway. Some goals will be annual, some monthly, and some are weekly.
We all need cheerleaders! My Gramps used to say, “I don’t know what you’re doing, but you’re doing a good job”. Different people in our Trusted Advisors will have different strengths in this area: you know the ones who will offer helpful critiques and interesting perspectives, versus those like my Gramps who will just cheer with you when you succeed, no matter how small. Others will be willing to open their network of connections to you because they believe in you.
It can be helpful to share our Goals with our Trusted Advisors, even if they don’t have direct experience in our field–sometimes the best insights will come from those with the fewest pre-conceived notions.
